The Mainz Cathedral is actually called the High Cathedral of St. Martin in Mainz. It is the cathedral (bishop's church) of the Roman Catholic diocese of Mainz and is one of the imperial domes.

There was a Christian community here as early as the 4th century. The first bishop comes from the 6th century.

Archbishop Willigis converted the cathedral into a cathedral around the year 1000. Over time, the cathedral contains Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements.
